Overview
As a Research Software Engineer in OxRSE’s embedded group within the Department of Physics, you will contribute to world-leading software for astronomical and translational science projects. In the first two years you will focus on the ATLAS project, collaborating across researchers to build reliable, maintainable software and promote best practices. You will also help deliver training and workshops to scale software development expertise. After the initial period, you can work on diverse physics-related projects and continue developing technical and consultancy skills. This role offers impact through shaping research software and enabling reproducible results.
Responsibilities- Develop and maintain software for ATLAS and related research initiatives
- Collaborate with researchers to design reliable, maintainable solutions for scientific questions
- Contribute to data management, data processing and public data availability aspects of ATLAS
- Deliver workshops and training on software development best practices
- Promote reproducible research and good software engineering practices across projects
- Expand personal technical and research skills and support project management and consultancy
- Significant software development experience in research setting
- Proficiency in Python and web frameworks (especially Django)
- REST API development experience
- Linux and shell scripting
- Experience implementing and managing large relational databases (multi-billion row)
- Ability to rapidly learn new programming languages, libraries and technologies
- Strong collaboration skills and ability to work with researchers
