Senior Applications Operations Engineer (Oracle)

In this role you will oversee critical database services within HMRC’s CDIO. You’ll ensure high availability, security and recoverability across Oracle and other relational databases while supporting production and development needs. You will contribute to 24/7 live service operation and lead DBA activities, driving automation and best practices. This is a mission-driven role at scale within one of Europe’s largest IT infrastructures. You’ll work with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable data services that enable government programs and decision making.

- Maintain departmental databases for availability, data integrity, access control, backup and recovery
- Monitor performance, improve database efficiency and manage batch processes
- Provide test databases and data for development and testing needs
- Deliver change and project work, including out-of-hours activities
- Provide 24/7/365 support for critical databases and incident resolution
- Design and administer Oracle databases and other relational DBs; perform scripting for utilities
- Coordinate installation, configuration, upgrades, and maintenance of database systems
- Lead small DBA teams on project and support work; mentor junior staff
- Develop automated tooling for database administration and standardize procedures
- Define and enforce standards for database objects, security, and integrity
- Extensive Oracle database administration and design experience
- Strong knowledge of backup/recovery strategies and data security
- Good written and verbal communication skills; strong analytical ability
- Experience delivering changes and managing priority incidents
- Ability to provide 24/7 operational support and line manage DBAs
