Overview

In this Senior Back-End Engineer role, you will own and scale the ledger platform at the heart of iwoca’s fintech offering. You’ll design, implement, and run systems for the lifecycle of accounts, reconciliation, and reporting, ensuring accuracy and production reliability. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business needs into robust software and drive ongoing improvements. This role offers meaningful impact by supporting efficient credit and lending operations for thousands of SMEs.

Responsibilities
  • Lead delivery of multi-stakeholder projects and systems
  • Develop deep domain expertise in fintech ledger and reporting needs
  • Conduct technical scoping and prototyping for feasibility and decisions
  • Architect and implement scalable solutions for account lifecycle, reconciliation, and reporting
  • Apply domain modelling to simplify complex problems and enable testable, evolvable design
  • Minimize unnecessary work, avoid single points of failure, and ensure zero-downtime releases
  • Translate product requirements into concrete technical plans for the team
  • Investigate and fix live issues, owning production reliability
  • Contribute production-ready code and documentation to foster collaboration
  • Improve development practices and share tooling with the organization
  • Participate in AI-assisted development while maintaining accountability and code quality
  • Promote learning and growth within the team
Key requirements
  • Extensive back-end engineering experience
  • Experience building and running microservices and distributed systems in production
  • Strong relational database experience (PostgreSQL preferred; others acceptable) with emphasis on data integrity
  • Experience with systems requiring strict correctness (ledgers, accounting, payments) including invariants and audit/reconciliation controls
  • End-to-end feature delivery experience including scoping, design, and production rollout
  • Proficient in collaboration and peer reviews with clear communication to finance and engineering stakeholders
  • Degree in a quantitative field or equivalent professional experience
  • Familiarity with AI tools in daily workflow and ability to validate AI outputs for correctness and performance
  • Desirable: fintech, high-scale domains; modern data tooling (Snowflake, dbt); messaging/event-driven patterns (Kafka)
