Overview

As a Backend Engineer on 9fin’s cross-functional Search and AI team, you will build and scale backend services and APIs that power AI-enabled tools and the platform’s search experience. You’ll mentor peers, influence technical architecture, and explore new technologies to enhance performance, reliability, and data workstreams. You’ll collaborate with product, design, data science, and financial teams to deliver impactful features that shape how users access proprietary credit data and insights. Responsibilities
  • Develop backend services and APIs powering AI tools and generative features
  • Build and optimise search-backed backend systems for performance and scalability (Elasticsearch)
  • Lead code reviews, mentor engineers, and influence architecture
  • Experiment with new technologies, especially for AI and search offerings
  • Manage data modelling, access control, ML/AI integration, and data-visualisation infrastructure
  • Improve codebase health via refactoring, automation, and documentation
  • Own projects end-to-end from scoping to delivery across cross-functional teams
  • Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
Key requirements
  • Senior IC Engineer with system design and mentorship experience
  • Proficient in Python and web frameworks (FastAPI with strong typing & Pydantic)
  • Experience shaping data flow from storage to API endpoints and validation best practices
  • Strong SQL knowledge for data retrieval
  • Understanding of search technologies (Elasticsearch/OpenSearch/Solr) or high-performance NoSQL databases
  • Interest in Generative AI and broader AI concepts
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Commitment to writing testable, maintainable code and participating in code reviews
