In this role you will contribute to the Recurring Payin team, shaping the Direct Debit API and the broader Payin Platform that powers Wise’s money movement. You will work on scalable backend systems and REST APIs that support millions of customers across web and mobile, with a focus on cost-efficient, reliable payment routing and funding flows. The work connects cross-functional teams to deliver secure, high-volume financial services with a strong emphasis on safety and compliance. Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services in Java and Kotlin (Spring Boot) on AWS
  • Build and evolve RESTful APIs for web and mobile platforms
  • Develop and optimize card pay-in and other payment methods handling ~1B USD per month
  • Design/implement database schemas and optimize SQL for high-volume PostgreSQL data
  • Create and maintain event-driven architectures with Apache Kafka for asynchronous processing
  • Develop and maintain a payment orchestration system routing payments across providers for cost and reliability
  • Write unit, integration, and end-to-end tests ensuring financial system correctness and reliability
  • Conduct code reviews to uphold quality, security, and engineering standards
  • Participate in on-call rotations for Tier 2 production incidents
  • Collaborate with product, design, analytics, and engineering teams on cross-functional projects
  • Identify performance bottlenecks, scalability issues, and technical debt; address security and regulatory compliance
Key requirements
  • Proficiency in Java and Kotlin with Spring Boot
  • Experience deploying on AWS and building RESTful APIs
  • Strong SQL experience with PostgreSQL and handling high-volume transactions
  • Experience with event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka
  • Knowledge of payment systems and orchestration across providers
  • Background in testing (unit/integration/e2e) and secure coding practices
  • Ability to participate in on-call rotations and collaborate across teams
