Overview

In this role you will design and evolve backend services powering core banking products at Zopa. You’ll shape technical direction, own complex initiatives end-to-end, and collaborate across product-engineering tribes to deliver scalable, secure systems. You’ll balance immediate delivery with long-term sustainability while mentoring peers and lifting team capability. This is a senior, impact-focused opportunity to help scale essential banking capabilities in a hybrid, cross-functional environment. You will work with modern tech and have a clear hook in transforming how money moves for customers.

Responsibilities
  • Own complex initiatives end to end from idea to measurable outcome
  • Design scalable backend systems to handle real-world scale
  • Make architectural decisions balancing delivery speed and long-term sustainability
  • Bring clarity to ambiguous problems and define actionable plans
  • Influence prioritisation and trade-offs across teams
  • Raise the bar for engineering quality, reliability and accountability
  • Mentor engineers and strengthen overall team capability
  • Drive continuous improvement in how we build and operate systems
Key requirements
  • Track record delivering high-impact, complex systems in production
  • Strong testing discipline with Test-Driven Development (TDD)
  • Strong systems thinking and architectural judgment
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and turn complexity into actionable plans
  • Confidence making data-informed technical decisions with long-term consequences
  • Experience influencing beyond immediate team
  • Deep customer focus with bias toward measurable outcomes
