Overview

In this role you drive the cloud foundations for Checkout.com’s global payments platform. You will own and evolve multi-cloud infrastructure, primarily AWS and Azure, treating infrastructure as software and shipping with CI/CD. You’ll design scalable, secure architectures and build reusable Terraform modules, shaping the platform as a product with users, SLOs, and a roadmap. You work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure regulatory-compliant, highly available services at scale. This is a hands-on leadership role that blends engineering excellence with mentorship and strategic impact.

Responsibilities
  • Lead end-to-end design and delivery of large-scale platform projects from architecture to production
  • Develop and maintain Terraform modules and secure state management, promoting IaC practices
  • Collaborate with engineering managers and architects to refine requirements and ADRs
  • Act as Subject Matter Expert for team-owned services, ensuring high availability and incident response
  • Promote best practices, code quality, and cross-team standards
  • Manage technical dependencies across pillars to balance speed and business outcomes
  • Foster Checkout Operating Principles to shape group culture and efficiency
  • Explore and implement AI-driven automation to improve infrastructure efficiency
Key requirements
  • 5+ years in cloud engineering with deep AWS experience
  • Production experience with Azure including landing zones and governance models
  • Strong software engineering mindset with IaC and Python automation
  • Expert-level Terraform experience and CI/CD with Git-based workflows (Spacelift)
  • Solid cloud networking skills (VPC/VNet, hub-and-spoke, PrivateLink)
  • Kubernetes experience in production (EKS/AKS)
  • Security/compliance awareness for regulated environments; PCI DSS is a plus
  • Leadership and mentorship abilities; incident resolution and root-cause analysis
  • Ability to work in a complex, established estate with fast-moving delivery
