Senior COBOL Mainframe Engineer

Design and modernize IBM z/OS applications as a Senior Software Engineer in Waterloo, Ontario, using COBOL and enterprise mainframe expertise in a hybrid setting.

Manulife’s Affinity Life technology team needs an experienced engineer for mission-critical enterprise applications. You will develop with COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, and IBM z/OS while supporting production systems. The work connects established mainframe technology with APIs, automation, DevOps, and modernization.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, unit test, and integrate mainframe application enhancements
• Build solutions using COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, and z/OS
• Troubleshoot production issues and improve reliability, security, and performance
• Lead technical designs for complex backend and mainframe solutions
• Mentor engineers through guidance, reviews, and knowledge sharing

Requirements:

• Significant experience supporting enterprise-scale mainframe applications
• Strong COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, and IBM z/OS knowledge
• Experience with VSAM or related mainframe data technologies
• Production troubleshooting, performance tuning, and root-cause analysis experience
• Experience with Agile, source control, CI/CD, and software delivery
