Overview

As a Principal Data Engineer at Leonardo UK, you will lead secure, scalable data solutions across hybrid and cloud environments, guiding teams through the full data lifecycle. You will shape data strategy and capability across multiple programmes, collaborating closely with DevOps, Data Scientists and Analysts to deliver impactful insights. This role blends technical leadership with people management, driving performance and continuous learning in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical leadership for data engineering delivery within the team
  • Design, implement and maintain end-to-end data solutions (acquisition, integration, storage, processing, analysis)
  • Develop scalable data architectures using big data tools and workflow systems
  • Mentor junior data engineers and manage project tasks across teams
  • Collaborate with DevOps, Data Scientists, Analysts and Cyber Consultants
  • Engage stakeholders, present and defend technical solutions
  • Support ML model deployment and KPI-driven delivery
  • Contribute to roadmap development and technology assessments
  • Oversee team operations, including utilization tracking and meetings
Key requirements
  • Strong Python and SQL skills
  • Experience with ETL flows, data pipelines and orchestration
  • Understanding of SQL and NoSQL database architectures
  • Experience with cloud technologies and cloud platforms
  • Experience with CI/CD practices
  • Experience with big data tools (Spark, Hadoop, NiFi)
  • Experience managing direct reports and providing performance feedback
  • Ability to create delivery plans and estimate timelines for teams
  • Experience supporting ML model deployment and DevOps collaboration
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement
  • Proactive mindset and continuous learning
