Overview

As part of the Data Governance & Data Quality team, lead the day-to-day delivery and improvement of reference data management across Markel International. You will create governance materials, documentation, and communications to promote governance in BAU, while ensuring reference data stays accurate and aligned with business and regulatory needs. You’ll collaborate with data owners, stewards, and SMEs to embed governance in processes and drive continuous improvement. This role offers a meaningful chance to shape data governance at scale, influence data strategy, and support cross-functional delivery.

Responsibilities
  • Hands-On Reference Data Delivery: manage data requests, investigate data issues, and maintain reference data structures (e.g., Ataccama RDM); ensure outputs are accurate and delivered on SLA
  • Reference Data Process Ownership: oversee continuous improvement of reference data processes, identifying inefficiencies and driving quality, efficiency, and user experience improvements
  • Data Governance Enablement: support implementation of the Data Governance framework in line with the International Data Policy; contribute to domain definitions, ownership models, and governance standards
  • Data Governance Awareness & Content Development: produce governance artefacts, process documentation, and training materials; create communications for Data Strategy rollout
  • Governance Coordination: support governance forums and working groups, guiding stakeholders in adopting governance practices and reference data processes
  • Act as a trusted support function to help stakeholders embed best practice in BAU
Key requirements
  • Hands-on data management, reference data, or data operations experience
  • Understanding of Data Governance and Data Quality principles
  • Strong analytical skills to investigate and resolve data issues
  • Process- and deadline-focused work style
  • Good communication skills across multiple channels
  • Experience with data tools/platforms (e.g., Ataccama or similar) desirable
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, especially PowerPoint
  • Ability to collaborate across business and technology teams
  • Insurance or financial services experience preferred
