Overview
In this IT role, you contribute to HMRC’s Digital Services, delivering customer‑centric digital solutions using Java within an Agile Scrum team. You’ll help plan, develop, and maintain high‑volume services that serve millions of users, while mentoring others and improving service resilience. The work blends development with live‑service operations, emphasizing secure, scalable, and observable systems. Responsibilities
- Plan and lead development activities for legislative changes, service enhancements, maintenance and incident resolution within tight timescales
- Translate user needs into effective technical solutions by working from user stories
- Develop and maintain deep knowledge of the service architecture and mentor others
- Operate and support live services with monitoring/observability tools
- Contribute to deployment activities and own production releases
- Improve resilience, stability, scalability and maintainability of services
- Support and mentor less experienced developers within the team
- Foster continuous improvement and engineering excellence
Key requirements
- Java 8 or newer and Spring Framework experience for delivering user‑centred digital services
- Experience planning and leading development on related user stories
- DevOps practices including CI/CD, unit testing, TDD, Jenkins, Git (or similar)
- Ability to take ownership of risks and technical debt with stakeholders
- Problem solving with multiple solution approaches including process improvement
- Experience evaluating data against business rules via rules engines (e.g., Apache KiE – Drools)
- Experience operating a live service using observability tools (Kibana, Grafana, Google Tag Manager) and managing incidents within ITIL
- Knowledge of web security best practices (OWASP Top 10)
- Experience with tools for API, performance, accessibility and security testing
