Overview

Senior Engineer within the Group Electrics & Controls - Excavator team, delivering electrical and electronic systems across JCB’s excavator product range. You will translate customer needs into robust requirements, architect solutions, and lead integration from concept to production on real machines at the manufacturing site. The role blends hands-on hardware/software work with cross-functional collaboration to ensure timely, high-quality outputs. You’ll contribute to product excellence, leveraging ECU communications, safety and cyber considerations, and rigorous verification. This is a hands-on, delivery‑focused opportunity at scale with a strong emphasis on practical impact.

Responsibilities
  • Translate customer needs into clear, testable functional requirements
  • Design and evaluate system architectures across multiple products to drive reuse
  • Select hardware platforms meeting environmental, performance, and cost targets
  • Develop software and system architectures for technical solutions
  • Coordinate third-party suppliers and define software architectures
  • Ensure robust ECU communications using SAE J1939 and Ethernet
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
  • Incorporate design for manufacture considerations including software deployment
  • Monitor system health and diagnostics via onboard and OTA technologies
  • Apply V‑Model and structured software development processes
  • Consider functional safety and cybersecurity throughout design
  • Prepare and execute validation and verification test plans
  • Support risk analysis and quality techniques (FMEA, 8D, Ishikawa)
  • Drive component reuse and maintain technical documentation
  • Support system- and vehicle-level integration to ensure proper power, communication, and operation
Key requirements
  • Strong base knowledge of electronic and software development from firmware to application layer
  • Experience translating requirements into structured, testable specifications
  • Familiarity with CAN-based protocols such as CANOpen and J1939
  • Experience with validation and system integration testing
  • Awareness of functional safety and cybersecurity implications
  • Experience using electronic lab equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers, signal generators, power supplies)
  • Understanding of design verification and structured development techniques
  • Experience delivering electronic systems from concept to production
  • Ideally experience in Tier 1 or OEM environments
  • Qualification in electronics or software engineering or equivalent experience
  • Willingness to travel internationally
  • Strong communication and technical writing
  • Self-motivated and analytical

  • Low-level firmware to application layer integration
