Overview

In this role, you lead and shape Very's data engineering organisation within the Data team, aligning with business goals and product needs. You will set the technical direction, modernise platforms, and drive cloud adoption to deliver scalable data products. You’ll nurture engineers, attract and retain talent, and remove obstacles to enable high-performance delivery. You collaborate with Architecture, Product, and Technology leaders to translate business priorities into tangible engineering outcomes. This is a chance to impact decision-making across the group and help Very scale its data ecosystem while maintaining a culture of trust and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and grow multiple data engineering leaders and their teams
  • Define and communicate the data engineering strategy and technical direction
  • Attract, develop and retain top engineering talent
  • Deliver secure, reliable, and scalable data products in collaboration with business domains
  • Champion engineering excellence and modern practices to improve quality and resilience
  • Manage technical debt, roadmaps, and platform modernisation initiatives
  • Foster cross-functional collaboration with Architecture, Product, and Technology leads
  • Balance long-term strategy with immediate value delivery
  • Influence stakeholders across the organisation to align data capabilities with business goals
Key requirements
  • Significant experience leading large-scale data engineering organisations in modern tech environments (AWS, Teradata, Fivetran, Power BI)
  • Proven track record building and inspiring high-performing engineering teams
  • Experience delivering data platforms, pipelines and products at scale
  • Hands-on data engineering background with modern engineering practices
  • Experience in Agile, DevSecOps and product-led delivery
  • Strong strategic thinking with operational delivery
  • Excellent stakeholder management and senior-level influence
  • Experience managing technical debt and data platform roadmaps
  • Coaching and mentoring passion
  • Experience with AWS and cloud-based data platforms; Teradata, Fivetran and modern data integration tooling
  • Business Intelligence and analytical engineering capabilities
  • Experience in multi-cloud or complex enterprise data environments
  • Background in Retail, eCommerce, Financial Services or data-rich organisations
