As an Expert Forward Deployed Engineer, you drive security, reliability, and modernization of business‑critical banking apps. You lead hands‑on engagements with development teams to remediate vulnerabilities, automate testing, and modernize legacy stacks, while shaping scalable CI/CD, observability, and deployment patterns. You work directly with clients to define remediation approaches and personally implement critical changes. This role blends software engineering, DevOps, SRE, test automation, and application security to deliver measurable improvements.
Responsibilities- Lead targeted engagements addressing security, testing, release, resilience, and legacy tech with development teams
- Assess code, dependencies, runtime, test coverage, deployment, CI/CD, observability, and operational risks
- Write, debug, review, and refine production‑quality code/configuration during engagements
- Define and implement modernization/remediation plans with clear priorities and measurable outcomes
- Develop or improve unit/integration/contract/landing tests using Test‑Driven Development
- Select automation-testing approaches per app and drive implementation, including AI coding assistance
- Source test data and implement secure data masking for lower environments
- Conduct vulnerability triage, root‑cause and dependency analyses, prioritization, secure code changes, and regression testing
- Upgrade runtimes/frameworks/libraries/containers/OS to supported versions
- Establish sustainable dependency management with continuous updates (Renovate/alternatives)
- Modernize legacy apps/middleware (WebSphere/WebLogic)
- Containerize with Docker and support OpenShift deployments
- Improve source control, branching, PRs, and code reviews
- Design/optimize CI/CD pipelines for safe, repeatable releases
- Automate database changes (Liquibase/Flyway)
- Automate installed software/environment changes (Ansible)
- Implement secure coding, secrets management, authentication/authorization, and least privilege
- Introduce standard observability: logging, metrics, tracing, dashboards, alerting, health checks
- Enhance exception handling, diagnostics, rollback, and production validation controls
- Design/improve resilient deployment architectures (hot‑hot, cross‑DC)
- Lead technical workshops and communicate decisions/risks/challenges to stakeholders
- Provide technical leadership via reviews, standards, documentation, and knowledge transfer
- Take ownership from assessment through production deployment, stabilization, and handover
- Extensive hands‑on software engineering experience with production apps
- Expertise in Java/JVM; strong TypeScript skills beneficial for Node.js projects
- Spring ecosystem and modernizing Java enterprise apps experience
- Recent personal coding, debugging, and code review in production
- TD/automated testing across multiple frameworks; CI/CD integration of test suites
- Secure coding practices, vulnerability remediation, dependency risk management
- Runtime/framework/library upgrades; container platforms (Docker/OpenShift); Linux environments (RHEL preferred)
- Build tools (Maven/Gradle/npm); advanced Git workflows; production debugging
- Observability, exception handling, production readiness, distributed systems
- Security, data masking, secrets management, least privilege controls
- AI-assisted development tool usage for engineering/testing/delivery
- Strong client-facing communication and leadership in cross‑functional settings
