Senior Linux Desktop Engineer
Stanford Black Limited
A global leading hedge fund is undertaking a significant transformation of its internal technology environment, with an ambition to establish a Linux-first operating model across its global workforce .
To support this, the business is investing in a newly formed engineering group tasked with rethinking how desktop computing is delivered, managed and maintained at scale.
The opportunity comes at an interesting time for enterprise Linux, with developments around immutable operating systems, application isolation and more controlled software delivery creating new possibilities for how organisations approach desktop infrastructure.
This is a genuine greenfield opportunity to help shape that transition within a sophisticated, technology-led investment business, rather than simply inheriting and maintaining an established environment.
The Role
You'll join a small, developing team responsible for establishing the engineering foundations of the firm's future Linux-first desktop environment.
The emphasis is on building a robust, consistent and scalable experience for a global population of highly technical users, combining operating system expertise with automation, systems engineering and an understanding of the wider Linux ecosystem.
Areas of focus include:
- Linux Desktop Evolution: Help define how Linux is deployed, configured and experienced across a large enterprise environment.
- Operating System Engineering: Explore approaches to OS standardisation, image management, software delivery and controlled system updates.
- Automation & Scalability: Develop tooling and processes that make managing a global Linux environment more efficient and consistent.
- Security & Resilience: Establish approaches to maintaining secure, reliable and well-managed desktop systems.
- Infrastructure Integration: Work across physical hardware, virtualisation and underlying infrastructure to deliver a cohesive computing environment.
- Technical Innovation: Evaluate emerging Linux technologies and challenge traditional approaches to enterprise desktop management.
What We're Looking For:
- Strong commercial experience working with Linux operating systems , ideally in an infrastructure or systems engineering capacity.
- A deep understanding of Linux administration, configuration, troubleshooting and system behaviour.
- Experience with Python, particularly for automation and systems tooling.
- Knowledge of OS deployment, image management, package management and configuration standardisation.
- Experience supporting Linux across physical and virtual environments.
- An understanding of endpoint security, software lifecycle management and system reliability.
- Someone who enjoys building rather than simply maintaining, with the initiative to influence technical decisions in a developing engineering environment.
- Experience with numerous Linux distros, transactional updates, application sandboxing &/or enterprise Linux desktop deployments is preferred.
Why Consider It?
- Genuine greenfield: Join a newly established team with the opportunity to help define its direction.
- Large-scale transformation: Play a part in moving a global quantitative investment business towards a Linux-centric environment.
- Emerging technology: Work in an area where developments in immutable operating systems and application delivery are creating new possibilities.
- Technical ownership: Influence the standards, tooling and architecture that will shape the firm's future desktop environment.
- Scale and complexity: Apply your Linux expertise within a globally distributed, highly demanding engineering organisation.
