Overview

In this role you will support production and pre-production databases across Oracle and SQL Server, ensuring availability and performance. You’ll collaborate with TOCS and project teams to manage changes safely, while driving automation and continuous improvements. You’ll handle upgrades, migrations, DR testing, and on-call duties to keep services resilient. The position sits in the Data Platform Unit, contributing to reliable, secure data environments at Virgin Money.

Responsibilities
  • Support Production and Pre-Production databases, prioritize incident resolution and risk mitigation
  • Perform upgrades, patching, migrations, tuning and DR testing across Oracle/SQL Server environments
  • Implement process automation and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate with Lead Database Engineers, Infrastructure Designers and Project Managers to meet strategic needs
  • Escalate and coordinate with stakeholders to resolve operational issues within SLAs
  • Maintain high availability and disaster recovery configurations (Oracle RAC, Oracle Data Guard, SQL Server Always On)
  • Utilise monitoring and tooling to optimise performance and reliability
  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rota after training period
  • Self-manage development and keep skills current
Key requirements
  • Strong experience with database administration in production for Oracle and SQL Server
  • Troubleshoot production issues quickly with analytical approach and provide fixes/enhancements
  • Experience with database builds, patching, migrations and upgrades
  • HA/DR knowledge including Oracle RAC/Restart/ASM/Data Guard and SQL Server HA
  • Database performance tuning and optimisation
  • Experience with Oracle Enterprise Manager
  • Operating system experience: Oracle Linux, Red Hat Linux, Windows, AIX, Solaris
  • Proactive, collaborative communication skills; ITIL awareness (Incident/Change/Problem)
  • Willingness to develop skills in Oracle, SQL, Exadata and OCI
