In this senior role, you’ll develop and maintain industrial optimisation software that enhances refinery efficiency and planning. You’ll work within the USC Optimisation team to tackle mathematically intensive problems and contribute to a growing technical leadership path. You’ll apply strong mathematical reasoning to modelling and algorithms, ensuring robust, high-quality code in an evolving codebase. This position offers the chance to influence technical direction and collaborate across disciplines in a pioneering industrial software environment.

- Contribute to design, implementation, maintenance and improvement of industrial optimisation software and numerical modelling components
- Investigate complex mathematical, algorithmic and software engineering problems and drive them to resolution
- Own large or technically challenging work items and plan with minimal supervision
- Work within an existing and some legacy codebase, improving it while respecting established practices
- Apply mathematical reasoning to modelling, optimisation and algorithms
- Support robustness, performance and maintainability through debugging, profiling and extensive automated testing
- Demonstrate potential to lead technical projects or workstreams over time
- Provide coaching and technical support to less experienced developers
- Strong mathematical background with postgraduate qualification (MSc, PhD, or equivalent)
- Programming ability in at least one relevant language (e.g., C++, C, C#, Fortran)
- Experience in numerical modelling or mathematically intensive software development
- Proven potential to lead projects or technical workstreams
- Ability to work in a complex, evolving codebase
- Clear communication and collaborative skills
- Relevant industrial, research or advanced technical experience
- Background in applied mathematics, theoretical physics, operations research, or computer science with numerical depth
