Pay rate:- 60 -65 GBP/ hour Inside IR 35 (PAYE)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Python Engineer (AR/VR) to maintain and enhance software systems supporting multimodal data collection in a research lab based in Cambridge, UK.

The role focuses on Python backend development, data processing automation, distributed systems, and integration of prototype smart glasses, wearable devices, and third-party sensors. You will collaborate with software engineers, audio/video engineers, and research teams to ensure reliable data collection and deliver high-quality datasets for machine learning research.

Key Responsibilities:-

• Develop and maintain Python-based backend applications, services, and data collection pipelines.
• Integrate prototype wearable devices, smart glasses, and third-party sensors into existing software platforms.
• Automate data validation, processing, and post-processing workflows.
• Maintain and troubleshoot distributed systems, REST APIs, and data collection infrastructure.
• Support multimodal data collection involving audio, video, and inertial measurement sensors.
• Monitor system health, investigate technical issues, and perform root cause analysis during live collection sessions.
• Manage Linux environments, shell scripting, network configurations, and system automation.
• Deploy, test, and evaluate software upgrades to improve system reliability and performance.

Requirements:-

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong proficiency in Python development, particularly large-scale backend applications and data processing.
• Hands‑on experience with Linux systems and shell scripting.
• Experience building and maintaining distributed, RESTful, and concurrent systems.
• Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, including IPv4/IPv6, VLANs, and network topology.
• Experience with FastAPI or similar Python backend frameworks.
• Working knowledge of time synchronization across systems and devices.
• Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills in complex software and infrastructure environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with hardware devices, embedded systems, or multimedia sensors.
• Familiarity with audio, image, and video formats and processing workflows.
• Experience with relational databases, graph databases, or NoSQL databases.
• Knowledge of software and hardware testing frameworks and automated testing strategies.
• Experience with Windows system administration.
• Exposure to data collection platforms supporting machine learning research.

• Linux & Shell Scripting: System administration, automation, debugging, and environment management.
• Distributed Systems & Networking: REST APIs, concurrent systems, IPv4/IPv6, VLANs, and network topology.

• Data Pipelines: Data validation, transformation, post-processing, and workflow optimization.
• Hardware Integration: Smart glasses, wearable devices, embedded systems, and third-party sensors.
• Monitoring & Troubleshooting: System health monitoring, root cause analysis, and deployment testing.
• Additional Technologies: SQL/NoSQL databases, React, Windows administration, and testing frameworks.
