Overview

As a Senior Rail Operations and Systems Analyst at Arup, you will apply systems engineering to realise integrated rail outcomes across the full project lifecycle. You’ll lead technical work packages, develop whole-system solutions, and ensure interfaces are well managed. You will translate operational needs into design, contribute to feasibility and assurance, support bids and delivery, and mentor junior team members. This role offers impact across major rail projects in a collaborative, purpose‑driven environment.

Responsibilities
  • Apply systems engineering principles across the lifecycle to deliver safe, reliable and sustainable railways
  • Lead technical work packages on rail projects and develop integrated, cross‑disciplinary solutions
  • Manage interfaces and translate operational needs into practical design outcomes
  • Contribute to feasibility studies, assurance activities and option development
  • Support bids, project delivery and development of junior team members
  • Communicate complex technical issues clearly to stakeholders and clients
Key requirements
  • Degree in Engineering, Science or related discipline; Chartered Engineer status or close to achieving
  • Strong experience in rail systems engineering or systems engineering within a railway environment
  • Practical application of systems engineering principles: requirements management, integration, V&V, assurance
  • Experience in rail operational planning and system modelling techniques
  • Broad understanding of railway systems and how signalling, rolling stock, power, communications and operations interact
  • Experience leading technical tasks or work packages with strong stakeholder collaboration and communication skills
