Overview

As a Senior Research Software Engineer at King’s Digital Lab, you will develop high-quality code to support research product specifications in collaboration with research leads and the wider RSE team. You bring advanced expertise in at least one programming language and can lead technical decisions. You will deliver research solutions—from data pipelines to web applications—in diverse domains, with potential specialism in ML/AI, data visualization, or DevOps, alongside core web development. You will work independently and across multiple projects, contributing to e-Research capability and exploring new technologies and external collaboration opportunities.

Responsibilities
  • Develop high-quality code to support product specifications in collaboration with research leads and the RSE team
  • Deliver research solutions including data pipelines and web applications across diverse domains
  • Lead planning and decision-making for research software solutions
  • Contribute to e-Research capability within the Lab and Faculty, and across the University
  • Collaborate with academic partners and manage multiple projects in an Agile environment
  • Ensure best practices in software development, data management, accessibility, security, and privacy
Key requirements
  • Expertise with modern web development stacks (e.g. JavaScript/TypeScript/Python, HTML/CSS, Node.js/Django, containerisation, CI/CD pipelines) with maintainable, well-tested code
  • Advanced proficiency in making well-reasoned, complex technical decisions using appropriate technologies
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills guiding technical direction
  • Excellent collaboration, leadership and communication skills, with inclusive mentoring
  • Data modelling for database design for research applications
  • Motivation to learn new technologies and digital humanities methodologies, plus strategic view on emerging tech
  • Understanding of accessibility, security, privacy and ethical concerns for research apps
