Overview

As a Senior Software Engineer (Backend) you will design and build scalable backend services and platforms across On the Beach. You’ll contribute to cloud-native architectures and distributed systems that power search, inventory, pricing, and bookings. You’ll collaborate with product, engineering, and external partners to deliver reliable software at scale. This role offers the chance to influence system-wide decisions and work on high-impact, customer-facing capabilities in a fast-growing travel tech company.

Responsibilities
  • Design and build scalable backend applications and services
  • Develop APIs for customer-facing and internal systems
  • Integrate with external suppliers and third-party platforms
  • Process high volumes of requests and data
  • Design distributed and event-driven architectures
  • Work with asynchronous messaging and streaming technologies
  • Improve performance, latency, resilience and availability
  • Enhance caching and data-access strategies
  • Ensure reliable transactional workflows
  • Develop applications within AWS
  • Deploy and operate containerised applications
  • Improve monitoring, alerting and observability
  • Explore AI-assisted engineering and modern tooling
  • Understand end-to-end system behavior and production considerations

Key requirements
  • Strong commercial backend software engineering experience
  • C# and .NET or comparable backend experience
  • Designing and developing APIs
  • Building distributed systems and service-oriented architectures
  • Developing cloud-native applications, ideally within AWS
  • Experience with messaging, asynchronous processing or event-driven architecture
  • Designing reliable integrations with external/internal systems
  • SQL and/or NoSQL data stores
  • Building scalable systems handling high traffic or data volumes
  • Performance optimisation, caching and latency reduction
  • Designing for resilience and failure
  • Containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Observability and operating production systems
  • Automated testing and modern engineering practices
  • Independent problem-solving
  • Clear communication with technical and non-technical colleagues
  • Customer and commercial impact awareness
  • C#/.NET
  • API design and development
  • Distributed systems and SOA
