Senior Software Engineer - Backend Development

About the Role

Our client, a dynamic technology firm, is seeking a seasoned Senior Software Engineer specializing in Backend Development . This hybrid role, based in Kimberley, Northern Cape, ZA , offers the opportunity to design, build, and maintain scalable and reliable backend systems that power innovative applications. You will be instrumental in architecting robust APIs, optimizing database performance, and ensuring the security and efficiency of our platform. The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in one or more backend programming languages and a strong understanding of software design principles. You will collaborate closely with frontend developers, product managers, and other engineers to deliver high-quality software solutions. We are looking for a proactive problem-solver who is passionate about clean code, robust architecture, and creating exceptional user experiences. This position requires a balance of on-site engagement for team collaboration and architectural discussions, alongside remote flexibility for focused development work.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and implement scalable, high-performance backend services and APIs.
• Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code in one or more backend languages (e.g., Java, Python, Go, Node.js).
• Optimize application performance, database queries, and system resource utilization.
• Collaborate with frontend developers to integrate user-facing elements with server-side logic.
• Design and manage database schemas and data models (e.g., SQL, NoSQL).
• Implement security and data protection measures.
• Participate in code reviews to ensure code quality and adherence to best practices.
• Troubleshoot and resolve software defects and production issues.
• Contribute to architectural decisions and technology selection.
• Mentor junior engineers and share technical knowledge.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in backend software development.
• Strong proficiency in at least one modern backend programming language (e.g., Java, Python, Go, Ruby, Node.js).
• Experience with designing and developing RESTful APIs.
• Solid understanding of database technologies (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB) and ORMs.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and microservices architecture is a plus.
• Knowledge of containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) is beneficial.
• Strong problem-solving, analytical, and debugging skills.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience in a hybrid team environment.
• Understanding of software development best practices, including testing and CI/CD.
