Overview

In this role you will help build and operate Blackbird, GitHub’s distributed, scalable code search infrastructure. You’ll focus on infrastructure, automation, CI/CD, DX, observability, and security to support Copilot products and large-scale developer workflows. You’ll collaborate with a strong team of engineers and partner teams to deliver reliable, high-performance search technology for millions of developers. You’ll influence architecture, automation, and security practices while advancing planetary-scale systems. This is a chance to shape how developers navigate and understand code at scale, in a remote-friendly, growth-focused environment.

Responsibilities
  • Own system health and on-call rotations
  • Collect and analyze metrics to diagnose issues
  • Drive product refinement through data analytics and data integration
  • Automate production and deployment processes
  • Validate functionality in non-production environments
  • Improve developer tooling and development velocity
  • Ensure security, privacy, safety, and accessibility across products
  • Provide evidence of compliance (audit logs, reports)
  • Leverage SLOs and stakeholder collaboration for project planning
  • Write architecture briefs, prototypes, and learnings for planetary-scale systems
  • Design and implement APIs for component integration
  • Set up CI/CD pipelines for automated delivery
  • Write maintainable, high-quality code
  • Design, develop, test, and ship scalable solutions across GitHub services
Key requirements
  • 6+ years in software engineering or equivalent with production software experience in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python
  • OR Associate’s Degree + 5+ years in software engineering with production coding expertise in the same languages
  • OR Bachelor’s Degree + 4+ years in software engineering
  • OR Master’s Degree + 2+ years in software engineering
  • OR Doctorate or equivalent experience
