Senior Software Engineer - Commercial Trading

As a Staff Software Engineer in the Commercial Trading domain, you will help drive M&S’s digital transformation with robust, scalable backend solutions. You will shape technical direction, raise engineering standards, and ensure observability and operational excellence across products. You’ll lead design and implementation, mentor engineers, and collaborate with architecture, product, and business teams to solve complex trade and integration challenges. • Develop, test and debug high-quality software solutions, leading by example and promoting engineering best practices
• Provide technical leadership on solution design, implementation approaches and standards within projects
• Lead design and delivery of scalable software solutions and third-party integrations, coordinating with Architecture teams when needed
• Conduct thorough code reviews to enforce standards, test strategies and code quality
• Collaborate with business stakeholders, product managers and engineers to design effective technology solutions

• Proven track record building high-performing backend systems with focus on scalability, optimisation and reliability
• Strong understanding of software engineering principles, patterns and practices for maintainable and resilient systems
• Solid experience with automated testing across unit, integration and system levels
• Proficiency with Java, PL/SQL, JavaScript, Git and CI/CD pipelines
• Experience designing, building and operating scalable cloud-native applications with emphasis on performance, security and resilience
