Senior Software Engineer, News Automation Platform

In this role you will contribute to Bloomberg News’ automation platform, delivering reliable, scalable software that turns data signals into timely content. You’ll work with a cross-functional team to modernise the distributed architecture, improve observability and data governance, and develop AI-assisted tools for editors and reporters. The role combines backend focus with some frontend work, using a modern tech stack to support high-throughput content generation. You’ll have a meaningful impact on speed, accuracy and reliability of published news at scale.
Responsibilities- Design, build and evolve software powering automated news and insights at scale
- Own projects from ideation through production, testing and deployment
- Modernise the distributed content-generation platform for performance and maintainability
- Build observability and data governance tooling to trace data from source to publication
- Develop intelligent systems to detect content anomalies while controlling false positives
- Contribute to AI-powered tools that improve editors' and reporters' efficiency and accuracy
- Collaborate with Newsroom, Product and Engineering to translate needs into practical technical solutions
- Improve system reliability, testing, and operability and share improvements to engineering practices
- 4+ years of production software development experience in Python, Java, C++ or similar language
- Strong fundamentals in software engineering with reliable, maintainable, well-tested systems
- Experience designing or evolving distributed systems with architectural trade-offs
- Ability to break down problems, assess trade-offs and implement practical solutions
- Collaborative mindset with ability to work with both technical and non-technical colleagues
- Ownership mindset and curiosity about the systems you work on
- A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent practical experience
- Desirable: experience with high-throughput event-driven systems, Kafka or RabbitMQ, observability, data governance, AI/LLMs, frontend tech (TypeScript/React)
