Senior Software Engineer - ST&S

In this role you will design and deliver backend services and AI-enabled solutions for bp’s Trading, Shipping & Technology group in London. You’ll work with traders and other stakeholders to enable faster, better commercial decisions through scalable, cloud-native systems and data-driven workflows. You’ll influence architecture, embrace modern software practices, and drive production-grade data/AI initiatives from discovery to production. This is a hands-on role with impact on long-term technology strategy and execution.

• Design and develop backend services, platforms and RESTful APIs for trading and middle-office workflows
• Build cloud-native, scalable and resilient applications with automated testing (TDD/BDD)
• Address technical debt and performance bottlenecks; improve the technology landscape
• Apply Domain-Driven Design, reactive programming and event-driven architectures
• Contribute to architectural decisions and long-term roadmap
• Design and implement production-grade streaming solutions with low latency and high throughput
• Work on stateful stream processing, concurrency and partitioning challenges
• Collaborate with traders, risk analysts, finance and UX teams to solve real business problems
• Lead data & AI initiatives from discovery to production, including multi-agent systems and MCP services
• Develop observability, evaluation pipelines and performance metrics for AI applications
• Provide mentoring and engineering leadership to the team
• Support production systems to ensure availability and resilience
• Promote engineering best practices across design, development, testing, deployment and operations

• Strong OO design, data structures, algorithms and complexity
• Experience designing distributed, cloud-native applications
• Proficiency in Java, C#, Python, Scala or Go
• Hands-on with cloud platforms (GKE, OpenShift, EKS/AKS, Cloud Foundry)
• Experience with Kafka, RabbitMQ, or ActiveMQ
• Relational databases experience (PostgreSQL/MySQL)
• High-throughput, low-latency streaming ingestion/processing
• Reactive programming, DDD and distributed systems
• Concurrency, multithreading and JVM performance
• TDD/BDD, CI/CD, automated testing; production systems experience
• Experience in regulated or enterprise environments; strong communication skills
• Bachelor in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field or equivalent experience
