As Senior Software Engineering Manager, you will lead the development of next-generation embedded software and firmware platforms while building and growing a high-performing software engineering team. Working alongside multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will drive innovation across medical devices, connected health technologies, and embedded systems used in patient care applications.
The Role
This position combines technical leadership with people management, requiring an experienced software engineering leader who can define engineering processes, develop teams, and deliver compliant software solutions for regulated medical device products.
You will play a key role in architecting embedded software platforms, implementing modern software development practices, and ensuring compliance with global medical device standards.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
- Build, lead and mentor a team of software engineers.
- Establish and maintain software development processes aligned with medical device regulations.
- Drive adoption of best practices in software development, testing, validation, and DevOps.
Collaborate with global engineering teams and stakeholders to deliver complex development programmes.
Software Architecture & Development
- Architect software solutions for sophisticated electromechanical medical devices.
- Lead development of embedded firmware for regulated healthcare products.
- Design and develop software using C, C++ and Python.
- Support IoT and connected health initiatives through edge-device development.
- Drive innovation in embedded systems, controls, user interfaces, and device performance.
Verification, Validation & Compliance
- Develop software verification and validation strategies.
- Ensure compliance with IEC 62304, ISO 14971, IEC 60601 and related standards.
- Lead software testing activities and technical documentation.
Support product certifications and external regulatory testing activities.
Continuous Improvement
- Implement modern version control, CI/CD and automated testing methodologies.
- Review legacy codebases and improve compliance, quality, and maintainability.
- Drive continuous improvement across software engineering processes and toolchains.
What You'll Deliver
First 6-12 Months
- Deliver critical firmware enhancements to existing product platforms.
- Lead software development for new product introductions.
- Implement improvements to software engineering processes and development practices.
- Establish robust software governance, testing, and compliance frameworks.
Longer-Term Impact
- Build a scalable software engineering function capable of supporting multiple concurrent product developments.
- Define future embedded platform strategies that improve scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency.
- Introduce new technologies that enhance product performance and customer value.
- Contribute to a global engineering vision and culture of innovation.
About You
Essential Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics Engineering, Medical Device Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 10+ years of software engineering experience within medical devices, or significant experience within another highly regulated industry.
- Proven experience leading and developing software engineering teams.
- Strong background in embedded software and firmware development.
- Expertise in C, C++ and Python.
- Experience with RTOS, MCU/SoC architectures and modern DevOps practices.
- Strong understanding of software validation, verification, and compliance requirements.
- Experience working within international or globally distributed organisations.
Desirable
- Master's degree in a relevant technical discipline.
- Experience developing software in compliance with FDA and EU MDR requirements.
- Experience with connected health or IoT products.
