Overview

As a Senior Rail Systems Engineer at AECOM, you will lead safety-critical railway systems work within the Systems Engineering and Safety Assurance team. You’ll shape system definitions, requirements, and architectures to support diverse rail projects across public and private sectors. You’ll oversee requirements management and apply engineering processes to deliver high-quality, cost-effective outcomes. This role combines technical leadership with cross‑disciplinary collaboration to help move complex rail initiatives from feasibility to design, contributing to safer, smarter transport networks.

Responsibilities
  • Develop system engineering plans, define technical requirements, and create system architectures
  • Oversee requirements management using tools like DOORS and ComplyPro
  • Contribute to development and delivery of systems engineering processes to meet customer requirements
  • Analyze the relationship between system requirements and design/development needs
  • Create scopes of work and work packages for clients; act as senior technical resource
  • Provide specialized technical input to studies and design in your area of expertise
  • Develop study and design procedures to ensure high-quality, cost-effective work
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary project reviews and collaborate on deliverables
  • Develop cost estimates and technical effort estimates for projects
  • Perform quality control reviews of designs and calculations; prepare technical specification sections
  • Contribute to engineering budgets and schedules to meet project requirements
Key requirements
  • Engineering degree or equivalent; Chartered Engineer
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in railway systems safety and assurance, including system safety and interoperability
  • Knowledge of UK Health and Safety Legislation and Regulations
  • Strong communication skills
