Senior Technical Officer - Waste

Overview

In this role you will help improve waste and recycling services for nearly a million residents, leading key facilities, projects, and contracts. You’ll shape service improvements in collaboration with partners and stakeholders while supporting major policy changes and net-zero ambitions. You will analyse data, manage budgets, and prepare clear briefings to inform decisions. This is an opportunity to impact waste strategy and delivery at scale within a dynamic, changing environment.

Responsibilities
  • Manage facilities, projects, and contracts related to waste and recycling services
  • Lead service improvements and change initiatives
  • Analyse data and manage budgets and payments
  • Prepare reports, develop policies and procedures, and briefings
  • Collaborate with partners (Veolia, Brighton & Hove City Council, district/borough councils) to deliver outcomes
  • Support major reforms (Environment Act, UK ETS, closed landfill, PFI expiry, future waste strategy)
  • Translate policy into workable solutions and provide strategic guidance to decision-makers
Key requirements
  • Significant strategic experience in the waste industry
  • Experience developing and maintaining effective partnerships
  • Ability to take on new and complex areas of work and deliver
  • Experience preparing reports and developing strategies/policy ideas for decision-making
