Overview

In this role you lead governance, optimisation and compliance of the software estate to maximise business value. You shape and mature the SAM capability within the Digital Workplace team, ensuring assets are managed securely and in line with licensing and commercial terms. You collaborate with stakeholders and suppliers to drive visibility, cost savings and best practice, while building a high-performing SAM team dedicated to delivering a consistent service. Responsibilities
  • Define and maintain software governance controls, policies, and standards to ensure licensing compliance and audit readiness.
  • Shape demand and advise on licensing models to support software sourcing decisions.
  • Manage operational aspects of software contracts, entitlements, usage rights, and renewals.
  • Oversee supplier relationships, negotiations, renewals and audits in collaboration with business and tech teams.
  • Lead end-to-end SAM practices from acquisition to retirement, ensuring accurate licensing and optimisation.
  • Oversee software licensing spend, forecast commitments, and identify cost-avoidance opportunities.
  • Provide accurate, governed SAM data and meaningful reports on licence position and compliance risk to senior stakeholders.
  • Build strong relationships with business and digital teams, translating licensing requirements into practical guidance.
  • Lead and develop SAM Analysts to ensure consistent delivery of licence reviews and renewal processes.
Key requirements
  • Proven SAM experience in a medium to large organisation.
  • Strong understanding of software licensing models, including enterprise and SaaS vendors (e.g., Microsoft, Adobe).
  • Experience supporting licence audits, true-ups and contract renewals.
  • Ability to analyse usage and entitlement data to drive optimisation and cost savings.
  • Collaborative experience working with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Familiarity with SAM tools, inventory systems and licence reporting solutions.
  • Experience operating within governance, risk and compliance frameworks.
  • Line management or supervisory experience focused on developing specialists.
