Overview

In this Lead Software Engineer role, you will seed and grow the AI Engineering function within GCG technology and partner with business and AI engineers to translate ambiguous problems into production AI solutions. You’ll lead end-to-end development of AI applications, serve as a hands-on bridge between problem owners and the AI platform, and coach a growing team to become AI-first. You’ll shape scalable, secure generative AI at scale in a regulated environment, delivering measurable business impact.

Responsibilities
  • Seed and grow the AI Engineering function; build and lead a global team
  • Partner with business units to identify high-value opportunities and translate needs into specs
  • Design, build, and operate production generative AI applications (copilots, assistants, knowledge-search)
  • Lead end-to-end pipelines for retrieval-augmented generation (parsing, ingestion, embeddings, storage, retrieval, prompts)
  • Develop agentic workflows with guardrails and auditable boundaries
  • Practice eval-driven development with acceptance criteria, evaluation harnesses, and quality controls
  • Own projects from discovery to rollout and operations; ensure observability, cost tracking, and audits
  • Integrate AI with enterprise data systems and MLOps/LLMOps tooling; ensure responsible AI and compliance controls
Key requirements
  • Substantial experience leading software, platform, cloud, or data engineering teams
  • Hands-on engineering depth; able to contribute code and lead technical design
  • Practical experience applying AI/ML to real business problems, including agentic/LLM-based systems
  • Strong knowledge of platforms, data quality, and metadata; experience with distributed systems
  • Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders and translate between business and tech
  • Excellent written and spoken communication; ability to present complex material to diverse audiences
  • Right to work in the UK; hybrid London location; travel across time zones (US)
  • Hands-on production experience with LLM-powered apps, prompt engineering, retrieval, and evaluation
  • Bachelor’s degree in CS/Engineering or equivalent practical experience
  • Security, privacy, and compliance controls in production systems (IAM, encryption, audit logging, data governance)
