About The Company
Owen Daniels is supporting a rapidly growing business developing innovative applications for the marine industry. The company designs intelligent vehicle platforms and is progressing a pre-production project with a focus on advanced control systems and dependable software. Its work brings together software, engineering and marine technology to create capable mobile platforms for demanding real-world environments.
This is an opportunity to contribute to a developing product with the potential to make a meaningful impact in the marine sector. You will work alongside multidisciplinary colleagues and help turn system requirements into software that is tested, validated and ready for deployment.
About The Role
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer specialising in C++ control systems to design and deliver software for intelligent marine vehicles. You will take ownership of the architecture for closed-loop control and vehicle systems management, guiding work from initial scoping and design through implementation, integration and sea trials.
As a senior technical contributor, you will help establish robust software practices and act as the technical authority for software on mobile platforms. You will collaborate closely with software and wider engineering teams, review technical designs, and support the development of less experienced engineers. The role is permanent and offers the opportunity to influence both product architecture and practical performance in the field.
Qualifications
You will bring professional experience designing and developing software for control systems, together with advanced capability in modern C++. Experience with C++14 or a newer standard is required. You should also have a degree-level qualification in Computer Science, Mechatronics, Robotics or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
Knowledge of closed-loop control and practical PID tuning on physical systems would be advantageous. Experience in marine technology, mobile robotics, embedded or real-time systems, ROS or ROS 2, and CAN bus will be valued. Familiarity with sensor fusion, state estimation, path planning, autonomous systems or robotics software stacks would also be beneficial.
Candidates must have the right to work in the UK and be able to obtain BPSS clearance.
Responsibilities
- Design software architecture aligned with system requirements, with particular focus on closed-loop control and vehicle systems management.
- Develop and implement control features covering propulsion management, electrical systems, control allocation and autopilot functionality.
- Take technical ownership of software for mobile platforms, from early scoping and architecture through delivery.
- Create and maintain clear software documentation, including design records.
- Test and validate software through unit testing, simulation, bench testing and sea trials.
- Review colleagues’ designs and code to support reliable, modular and maintainable software.
- Work with software and engineering colleagues to deliver software and supporting documentation to agreed timelines.
- Mentor and guide less experienced engineers, sharing technical knowledge and supporting their development.
Benefits
The package includes a range of benefits designed to support wellbeing, financial security and professional growth. These include a pension scheme, with the option to contribute through salary sacrifice, and eligibility to participate in an annual discretionary bonus scheme linked to individual and company performance. Protection includes life assurance at four times salary and critical illness cover.
Annual leave is 25 days, in addition to bank holidays, and the company typically observes a Christmas shutdown. Employees also receive an additional annual Wellbeing Day, enhanced maternity and paternity pay, and access to private healthcare supporting physical and mental wellbeing. Ongoing learning and career development are encouraged through training programmes and LinkedIn Learning. Flexible working arrangements may also be available to help promote a healthy work-life balance.
Equal Opportunity
Owen Daniels and its client are committed to fair and inclusive recruitment. Applicants will be considered on their skills, experience and suitability for the role, without discrimination. We welcome applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and encourage candidates who meet the essential requirements to apply.
