Software Engineer - Cypher Planner

In this role you will help optimize the Cypher query planner and contribute to expanding Cypher language capabilities within Neo4j. You’ll work across the codebase—from parser to storage—to deliver faster, more reliable data retrieval. The position sits at the core of the database, focusing on execution plans and performance in a distributed, production environment. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve complex database problems and drive impactful improvements. This is a chance to shape how large-scale graph data is queried and utilized in real-world AI-powered applications.

• Enhance and optimize the Cypher query planner and related components
• Contribute to design and implementation of features for the Cypher language and Neo4j database
• Work across the codebase from parser to storage files and indexes
• Engage in abstract reasoning, compare design options, and anticipate edge cases in solutions

• Experience with performance-driven development (profiling, benchmarking, optimization)
• Familiarity with Agile processes (TDD, kanban/scrum, pair programming)
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn Scala
• Strong desire to learn
