Software Engineer – Java /Back End

In this role you will strengthen the in-house backend capabilities with Java, PostgreSQL, and API design. You collaborate with the development team to understand the existing architecture, migrate from an outsourced model, and implement robust features while maintaining coding standards. You contribute to API documentation and tackle technical debt to improve system reliability. This position offers hands-on work across data, APIs, and deployment considerations in a modern Java stack.

• facilitate knowledge transfer with the outgoing external team via code walkthroughs, pairing sessions, and documentation reviews
• understand and map the current Java architecture, service boundaries, DI patterns, build system, and deployment configuration
• design and implement new backend features, enhancements, and bug fixes in Java following standards
• manage PostgreSQL data models, migrations (Flyway/Liquibase), indexing, and query optimisation
• design, document, and maintain RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs with OpenAPI/Swagger documentation
• identify and address technical debt in collaboration with the wider team

• Excellent Java development experience (Java 11+) in production
• Spring Boot, dependency injection, and RESTful API design
• PostgreSQL schema design, complex queries, index optimisation, migrations (Flyway/Liquibase)
• APIs designed and documented with OpenAPI/Swagger
• Maven or Gradle build tools and modern Java development workflow
• Understanding of SOLID, DRY, Clean Architecture
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes from a developer perspective
• Interest in AI coding assistants (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor)
