Overview

As Technical Lead for Java & Web Platforms, you will guide the end-to-end delivery of complex, business-critical digital platforms. You’ll lead multidisciplinary, international teams while staying close to code, shaping scalable and secure solutions. The role blends hands-on engineering, architecture, and client engagement to turn requirements into pragmatic designs and robust delivery. You’ll influence engineering standards and drive cloud-native, microservices-based architectures with a focus on quality and maintainability. This is a high-impact opportunity to shape technology solutions for major UK and international clients.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the technical direction and end-to-end delivery of complex web applications and digital platforms
  • Translate business requirements into pragmatic technical designs and delivery plans
  • Lead multidisciplinary and internationally distributed teams across back-end, front-end, DevOps and QA
  • Define solution architecture, components, APIs, data flows and deployment approaches
  • Remain hands-on through coding, prototyping, code reviews and troubleshooting
  • Establish and promote engineering standards across quality, testing, security, performance, observability and documentation
  • Guide cloud-native, microservices-based and API-led solutions
  • Oversee technical delivery across development, test, release and production environments
  • Collaborate with Product Owners, Business Analysts, Delivery Managers and client stakeholders to manage priorities and risks
  • Mentor engineers and support their development
  • Contribute to discovery, estimation and solution shaping for new opportunities
  • Identify reusable components and accelerators with other BIP teams
Key requirements
  • Extensive experience designing, developing and delivering complex enterprise web applications or platforms
  • Significant hands-on software engineering background with deep expertise in at least one stack area
  • Strong back-end experience with Java, Spring and Spring Boot
  • Front-end familiarity with JavaScript/TypeScript and React or Angular
  • Experience designing RESTful APIs and distributed systems
  • Knowledge of software architecture, OOP, design patterns and microservices
  • Experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL)
  • Cloud delivery on major platforms (AWS, Azure or Google Cloud)
  • Containerised delivery (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Git-based workflows, PRs and code reviews
  • Strong DevOps understanding and CI/CD
  • Automated testing across unit, integration, API and e2e tests
  • Application security awareness (auth, authz, secure APIs, vulnerabilities)
  • Issue diagnosis and resolution for complex applications and integrations
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management
  • Experience with distributed or international teams
  • Full professional English proficiency
  • It would be great to have Terraform/CloudFormation, observability tools, and Agile tooling like Jira/Confluence
