Overview

In this contract role, you will own the day-to-day reliability and support of a Microsoft SQL Server and BI environment. You will work hands-on to keep databases, data models, and reporting services up, diagnose issues, and ensure high availability for business-critical systems. You’ll troubleshoot across SQL Server, SSAS, SSIS, SSRS, Power BI, and Fabric, collaborating with IT, Finance, and Data teams. The role offers autonomy in a distributed organization and a clear impact on operational stability and data accessibility. This is a UK-remote, 2-year fixed-term position focused on sustaining and improving the existing BI data platform.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as technical SME for SQL and BI environment
  • Maximise uptime and performance of critical SQL databases
  • Manage escalated user issues, support tickets, and incidents
  • Troubleshoot and debug SQL Server, SSRS, SSAS, SSIS, and Power BI problems
  • Support queries, stored procedures, functions and views
  • Investigate and optimise database performance
  • Maintain scheduled jobs and ETL processes
  • Support and maintain data models and reporting solutions
  • Ensure centralized data from multiple sources is accessible
  • Support finance and other critical systems relying on SQL
  • Collaborate with vendors and internal teams to resolve system issues
  • Maintain technical documentation and support records
  • Keep users informed on issue progress and actions
  • Provide occasional out-of-hours support for incidents or maintenance
  • Work closely with IT, Finance and Data teams to ensure reliable service
Key requirements
  • 5+ years with SQL Server / DBA / Data Platform support
  • Strong SQL skills: queries, stored procedures, functions, views
  • Experience debugging and optimising SQL queries
  • Experience with SSAS, SSIS, SSRS
  • Strong Power BI knowledge (Desktop and Service)
  • Knowledge of DAX, MDX, Power Query / M
  • Experience with SQL Server Agent and scheduled jobs
  • Understanding of database design and data modelling
  • Experience with ETL pipelines and dimensional modelling
  • Exposure to Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouses, Warehouses, Pipelines, OneLake)
  • Experience building/supporting analytics pipelines using Fabric, ADF or SSIS
  • Knowledge of Windows Server and networking
  • Experience in a service desk or operational support environment
