Overview

In this Staff Engineer role, you’ll lead the engineering direction for Pleo’s Telescope design system across web and mobile, enabling product teams to ship faster with consistent UI and high quality. You’ll shape architecture, standards, and release practices while elevating collaboration between Design and Engineering. You’ll own contribution workflows, tooling, and documentation to improve adoption and system health. This role blends strategy with hands-on coding and leadership in frontend engineering.

Responsibilities
  • Set technical direction for Telescope architecture, component standards, release practices, and quality bars
  • Drive evolution of the contribution model and cross-team interaction with Design Systems
  • Own triage, prioritisation, and expectations for incoming requests
  • Improve developer experience through tooling, automation, visual testing, and workflows
  • Support internal operational needs relevant to Design Systems
  • Improve measurement and communication of adoption and system health
  • Evolve docs publishing workflow
  • Lead cross-team rituals and align stakeholders across Design and Engineering
  • Coach engineers and grow frontend technical leadership
  • Contribute hands-on code as part of the role
Key requirements
  • Building and maintaining component libraries or platform-like products serving multiple teams
  • TypeScript and modern frontend engineering; React experience is a plus
  • Designing maintainable systems with clear boundaries, versioning, and backwards compatibility
  • Testing practices (unit, integration, end-to-end) and quality mindset
  • Accessibility and performance best practices for UI systems
  • Collaboration with designers and product engineers; navigating tradeoffs across stakeholders
  • Leadership, mentorship, and ability to coach others
  • Clear communication
  • Lead by example with pragmatism and care
  • Ability to break down complex problems and drive to a solution
  • Component libraries and design systems
  • TypeScript
  • React (experience is a plus)
