Staff Software Engineer

As a Staff Software Engineer at Deliveroo, you will shape the technical direction across teams and deliver solutions that move the business metrics. You’ll forecast timelines, manage risks, and set an incremental team pace while solving important problems in a complex, scalable platform. You’ll align non-adjacent teams, coach engineers, and influence the broader engineering strategy. This role combines technical depth with leadership to drive impactful outcomes in a fast-growing marketplace.

• Define and drive technical direction for the team and related groups
• Forecast project timelines, manage risks, and maintain sustainable pace
• Align cross-team disciplines to resolve unstructured challenges
• Coach colleagues and support up-and-coming leaders across levels
• Lead engineering interviews and contribute to recruiting practices and bar for senior roles
• Deliver readable, well-tested software and guide architectural decisions

• Expert in at least one relevant technical area
• Experience building web-based applications in any language (Go, Ruby/Rails, Python, Scala, or Rust)
• Familiarity with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL)
• Experience with scalable web architecture (20krpm and above)
• Familiarity with NoSQL data backends and key-value stores (Redis, DynamoDB, ElasticSearch, Memcache)
• Ability to solve logistical problems with software
