Staff Software Engineer

Location: London – hybrid, 3 days per week in the office

The role

As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll combine hands-on technical leadership with architectural ownership.

You'll:

• Lead end-to-end delivery within a senior Product Engineering squad.
• Remain hands-on in the code and set the standard for engineering quality.
• Own and evolve significant areas of the technical architecture.
• Help shape technical direction and product strategy.
• Work closely with Product, Engineering, Design, Data & AI, Customer Success and Sales leadership.
• Lead and develop senior engineers through mentoring, technical leadership and hiring.
• Build engineering practices and systems that allow teams to operate with increasing autonomy.
• Identify and remove bottlenecks that limit engineering velocity.
• Drive AI-native and automation-first approaches to software development.
• Bridge strategy and execution — ensuring that the right problems are solved, products ship quickly and quality remains high.

Technology

• Go and Python
• Rust as an additional technology of interest
• OR-Tools CP-SAT for constraint solving
• OpenTelemetry for end-to-end observability
• MCP for agent interfaces
• gRPC APIs and driver interfaces
• SDKs and CLIs

You'll be working across the stack, with software ultimately controlling and coordinating real physical equipment.

What we're looking for

We're interested in engineers who have operated at significant technical scale and enjoy solving complex problems where reliability, performance and real-world consequences matter.

You'll likely have:

• Experience architecting and shipping genuinely complex real-time, distributed or streaming systems.
• Strong experience with Go.
• Experience taking complex product capabilities from initial problem definition through architecture, implementation and production.
• A strong understanding of failure modes, distributed state and resilient system design.
• A desire to work across the stack rather than remain confined to a single technical layer.
• Previous experience providing technical leadership to senior engineers.
• A strong sense of ownership and the ability to resolve ambiguity independently.
• The ability to challenge assumptions and contribute to product direction rather than simply implement specifications.
