Staff Software Engineer, Code Search

As a Staff Software Engineer at GitHub, you will help design, scale, and operate Blackbird search infrastructure and AI-powered workflows within the Copilot Agents space. You will collaborate with a strong team to ship high-performance, globally scalable code and to drive architectural direction. This role focuses on distributed systems, search at scale, and reliability engineering to empower millions of developers. • Design, develop, test, and ship scalable code across GitHub services
• Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and code reviews to grow others
• Own system health and participate in on-call rotations
• Write architecture briefs, proposals, and carry out experiments
• Design APIs for seamless component integration
• Maintain operational excellence across teams
• Apply debugging tools and telemetry to verify assumptions and optimize performance
• Drive the technical roadmap and align engineering with product goals
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan and ship features and fixes

• 9+ years of software engineering experience with production software in languages such as C/C++/C#/Java/JavaScript/Go/Ruby/Rust/Python
• or an equivalent combination of education and experience with substantial software delivery
• Proven ability to design and maintain large-scale, distributed systems
• Experience with web-scale search, information retrieval, or context retrieval systems (preferred)
• Experience with Rust or other systems programming languages (preferred)
• Experience integrating AI/ML features into production systems (preferred)
