Overview

As a Staff Engineer in Dev Environments, you will shape the architecture and roadmap for a scalable developer experience across thousands of engineers. You’ll lead cross-team initiatives spanning local and remote dev flows, devcontainers, IDE/backend work, and AI-enabled workflows. You’ll mentor engineers, influence senior stakeholders, and set technical direction for an organization-wide tooling strategy. This role blends hands-on delivery with strategic leadership to remove friction and accelerate engineering velocity.

Responsibilities
  • Define architecture for local/remote dev containers, remote IDE lifecycle, and end-to-end dev loop across multiple brands
  • Build and standardize monorepo dev tooling at scale for the DoorDash umbrella
  • Provision production-like environments quickly with scalable, secure, cost-aware remote machines
  • Invent new approaches and adapt industry-leading practices to hard, unsolved problems
  • Design environments as AI-friendly sandboxes with on-demand spin-up and safe parallel execution
  • Support agents via IDE, CLI, or Slack without requiring laptops for review and shipping outcomes
  • Align cross-functional teams (Security, Infrastructure, Product Engineering) around ambiguous problems
  • Mentor engineers through design reviews, pairing, and architectural guidance; influence hiring and onboarding for senior roles
Key requirements
  • Track record shipping production systems and leading cross-team initiatives with group-level impact
  • Hands-on fluency in Go, Python, TypeScript and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform)
  • Experience managing compute with Kubernetes (multi-tenant, autoscaling) or lightweight VM/sandbox tech (e.g., Firecracker)
  • Knowledge of cloud networking, secure cross-boundary traffic routing (VPNs, service meshes)
  • Experience integrating LLM/AI tooling into developer workflows (e.g., Claude Code)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to influence senior stakeholders without formal authority
  • Experience partnering with engineering teams that consume your platform
