Overview

In this role you will shape the Developer Experience for DeepL’s internal engineers, guiding the platform, tooling, and AI-enabled capabilities that speed delivery. You’ll lead cross-team initiatives to boost productivity, design scalable workflows from development to release, and establish guardrails and standards. You’ll partner with product teams to turn developer needs into shipped, measurable improvements. This is a mission-driven role at a fast-moving AI company, with a strong emphasis on autonomous, evidence-based decision making.

Responsibilities
  • Own technical direction for a significant portion of the Developer Experience mandate and drive adoption across teams
  • Lead initiatives to lift developer productivity by improving processes and tooling
  • Design and build workflows and tooling covering the full software development lifecycle
  • Lead work on AI across the lifecycle, establishing useful guardrails at scale
  • Treat internal developers as customers and build a data-informed community around developer experience
  • Define standards across the track and guide migrations with a collaborative path to adoption
  • Mentor engineers through reviews, architecture decisions, and daily practices to keep systems maintainable
  • Share in operating what is built, including sustainable on-call rotations for services and tooling
Key requirements
  • Software engineering background with deep expertise in at least one language (C#, Go, TypeScript, Python)
  • Product-team experience and understanding of pipeline optimization from developer perspective
  • Genuine passion for developer experience and release engineering
  • Willingness to experiment with AI-enabled tooling and to tolerate failure during learning
  • Track record of technical ownership across multiple teams and ability to align engineers without formal authority
  • Judgement to ship practical solutions that can be iterated over time
  • Experience with driving adoption and consensus across teams
  • Strong collaboration and communication

  • Backstage or internal developer portal experience
  • GitLab CI/CD at scale (SaaS)
  • Knowledge of build systems, caching, and artifact management
