Staff Software Engineer, Git Storage

As Staff Software Engineer on the Git Systems Engineering team, you design and build scalable, reliable Git hosting services at GitHub. You will work across teams to evolve the Git storage stack and support AI-enabled software development. You’ll lead by example, mentor engineers, and drive high-availability and performance across distributed systems. • Design, develop, test, and ship scalable Git hosting services across multiple GitHub systems
• Document architectural designs, run experiments, and validate approaches with prototypes
• Provide technical leadership through code reviews and mentoring for reusable, high-quality code
• Coordinate with engineering and product teams to plan and deliver aligned projects
• Maintain live services and troubleshoot on-call incidents to protect performance and reliability
• Foster ownership and collaboration within the team and across locations

• 9+ years in Software Engineering with production-grade coding experience across C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python
• Or an advanced degree with substantial relevant experience and same language scope
• Experience delivering distributed, scalable software and operating systems at scale
• Strong written and verbal communication; ability to work asynchronously across global teams
• Experience with on-call operations and incident response
