Overview

As a Staff Software Engineer in Git Systems Engineering, you design and ship scalable GitHub services that power the world’s largest code-hosting platform. You will work across distributed teams to improve availability, performance, and scale, enabling AI-driven software development. The role emphasizes mentoring, ownership, and technical leadership in a remote-first, cross-location environment. You will influence architecture and run live-site reliability initiatives, shaping how GitHub handles petabytes of data and millions of QPS.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, and ship scalable GitHub services across multiple products
  • Document architectural designs, run experiments, and validate through prototyping
  • Provide technical leadership via code reviews and maintainable, high-quality code
  • Collaborate with product owners to prioritize and deliver projects meeting business goals
  • Maintain live services operations and coordinate on-call responses
  • Foster an empowered, ownership-driven team culture
Key requirements
  • 9+ years in software engineering with proven production software delivery in C/C++/C#/Java/JavaScript/Go/Ruby/Rust/Python (or equivalent)
  • Alternative: Associate’s Degree + 8+ years in software engineering with similar language experience
  • Alternative: Bachelor’s Degree + 7+ years in software engineering with similar language experience
  • Alternative: Master’s Degree + 5+ years in software engineering with similar language experience
  • Alternative: Doctorate + 3+ years in software engineering with similar language experience
  • Ability to meet security screening requirements
  • excellent written communication in a distributed, asynchronous environment
