As Staff Backend Engineer at Wise, you will shape the architecture of our KYC and onboarding platform, leading technical direction across the squad. You’ll drive scalable, reliable microservices and mentor engineers while partnering with product, design, and security teams. This role focuses on automating verification flows, improving decisioning and observability, and supporting rapid, compliant growth. You’ll work on a configuration-driven platform that enables faster, fairer customer experiences at scale.

- Design, build and maintain high-performance backend services using Java, Spring Boot, and cloud tech
- Lead initiatives to enhance automation, reliability, and performance of verification systems
- Collaborate with product managers to translate business needs into technical solutions
- Mentor junior engineers and perform code reviews
- Steer architectural decisions and technical strategy for verification systems
- Develop internal tools to empower verification agents
- Contribute to engineering culture through knowledge sharing and best practices
- 10+ years of Java 8+ experience with Spring framework
- Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases
- Strong system design for distributed, high-throughput services
- Track record of leading technical initiatives and mentoring engineers
- Security best practices and data protection knowledge
- Excellent problem-solving and attention to detail
- Ability to communicate complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience with financial or KYC verification systems is a plus
