In this Staff Software Engineer role on the Traffic Team, you will help design and fortify the edge-scale traffic platform that underpins GitHub’s globally used services. You’ll collaborate with a distributed, remote-first team to deliver scalable, reliable load-balancing and routing solutions, shaping how millions of developers interact with GitHub. You’ll lead architectural decisions, mentor peers, and own impactful improvements to ensure performance and resiliency at global scale. - Lead technical decisions and architecture for traffic-related systems
- Design and implement scalable, reliable solutions (rate-limiting, routing, etc.)
- Maintain and improve the GitHub Load Balancer and traffic-management systems
- Write and review code in Go and Ruby on Rails
- Mentor engineers in technical and architectural decision making
- Participate in on-call rotation and team ceremonies
- 9+ years of software engineering experience with production software delivery, with proficiency in languages such as C/C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- 4+ years building and supporting large, high-traffic applications at scale in platform/infrastructure domains
- 4+ years supporting cloud-native workloads in Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud
- 2+ years maintaining a Load Balancer with abuse protection mechanisms (DDoS, load shedding)
- Experience with Go and Ruby/Rails is expected
- Strong written communication and ability to work with distributed teams
