Tax Manager
The Agency
Job Description
Title: Tax Manager
Office Location(s): Dayton, OH or Cincinnati, OH
(Hybrid Schedule)
About the Company
Our client is a long-established, independent CPA and advisory firm that's built its reputation on straightforward advice and lasting client relationships. The firm serves privately held businesses, family-owned companies, and high net worth individuals, and many of those clients have been with the firm for generations. They're adding a Tax Manager to a busy tax practice where proactive planning matters as much as compliance.
About the Role
In this role, you'll own a portfolio of individual and business clients, review complex returns, lead planning work, and mentor the next group of tax professionals. Partners here invest heavily in their people, and there's a real path to Senior Manager, Director, and Partner for someone who wants to build a long-term career with the firm. The role offers a hybrid schedule.
Responsibilities
- Manage tax compliance and advisory engagements for individuals, partnerships, S corporations, and C corporations
- Review complex returns for accuracy, quality, and compliance before they go out the door
- Build and carry out proactive tax planning strategies for business owners and their families
- Serve as the primary point of contact and trusted advisor for a book of closely held business and high net worth clients
- Research complex tax issues and present clear recommendations to clients and firm leadership
- Support trust, estate, and succession planning work for clients thinking about the next generation
- Manage engagement workflow, staffing, budgets, and deadlines
- Mentor, train, and develop staff and senior accountants
- Handle IRS and state notices, examinations, and dispute resolution
- Spot opportunities to expand client relationships and bring in additional advisory work
Qualifications
- 5+ years of public accounting tax experience
- Active CPA license
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field
Required Skills
- Strong technical knowledge of individual, partnership, S corporation, and C corporation taxation
- Experience reviewing returns and managing client engagements from start to finish
- Solid tax research and analytical skills
- A track record of supervising and mentoring staff
- Clear, confident communication with clients and colleagues
- The ability to keep multiple engagements and deadlines on track
Preferred Skills
- Work with closely held and family-owned businesses in industries like manufacturing and distribution, real estate, healthcare, restaurants and retail, or nonprofits
- Trust, estate, or gift tax experience
- Exposure to succession planning or ownership transition work
Pay range and compensation package
- What Makes This Opportunity Stand Out
- A defined path to Senior Manager, Director, and Partner, with leadership that promotes from within
- A partner mentoring program and 360 degree feedback, so you know where you stand and what's next
- Meaningful client relationships and real advisory work, not just compliance
- Generous paid time off starting in year one, plus profit sharing, a 401(k), and comprehensive medical and dental
- Employer paid life and long term disability insurance, with professional dues and CPE covered
- Leadership that genuinely supports work life balance and a close, collaborative team
- Access to the resources of a national accounting alliance while keeping the feel of an independent firm
This is a great fit for a CPA who wants to lead client relationships, develop a team, and build a long-term career at a firm that invests in its future partners. For immediate consideration, please contact Gage Plueger directly.
