Overview

As a Technical Author you will develop and maintain clear documentation for installation, testing, commissioning, operation and maintenance of electrical systems aboard marine vessels. You will work with engineers, project managers and production teams to ensure accurate, compliant materials that support vessel integration and lifecycle processes. The role combines technical writing with documentation control to enable successful projects in the UK marine sector. This is a hands-on position in a collaborative, engineering-heavy environment with significant impact on safety and efficiency.

Responsibilities
  • Produce installation, operation and maintenance manuals for marine electrical systems
  • Develop work instructions, installation procedures, technical specifications and electrical installation guides
  • Create documentation from electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, engineering drawings and design packages
  • Prepare commissioning, testing, inspection, Factory Acceptance Test and Site Acceptance Test procedures
  • Generate technical data packs, equipment technical files and configuration control records for customer approval and platform integration
  • Review engineering change requests and ensure controlled documentation reflects the latest designs
  • Work with design engineers, project managers, production teams, installation personnel and customers to verify technical information
  • Capture lessons learned and support design reviews, production readiness reviews and customer meetings where documentation expertise is required
Key requirements
  • Experience in technical authoring within the engineering, marine, industrial sectors
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems, power distribution, control systems and equipment installation practices
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, general arrangement drawings and equipment data sheets
  • Good understanding of naval vessel systems, maritime terminology, shipyard installation practices and electrical safety requirements
  • Experience producing clear technical documentation for engineers, electrical fitters, commissioning engineers, production teams and end users
  • Competent user of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio and AutoCAD
  • Familiarity with document control, configuration management, engineering lifecycle documentation and technical data packs
  • Excellent written English, proofreading and editing skills, with exceptional attention to detail
