Looking for a technical role that offers an excellent work-life balance?

My client offers a genuinely flexible working arrangement, with:

  • Just one day per week in the Grantham office
  • A 36-hour working week
  • A half-day every Friday
  • Hybrid working for the remainder of the week
  • A stable, long-term career within specialist defence engineering

We’re recruiting for a Technical Author with knowledge of armoured vehicles, tracked vehicles or specialist military equipment.

Previous technical-authoring experience would be valuable, but it isn’t the only route into this position. We’re equally interested in people who have developed strong technical knowledge through inspecting, maintaining or supporting military vehicle fleets.

The opportunity

You’ll produce and maintain clear, accurate technical documentation covering specialist vehicles, systems and equipment.

This position would particularly suit someone who understands how complex vehicles are operated, inspected, maintained and repaired—and can turn that knowledge into clear, practical instructions.

What you’ll be doing

  • Producing and updating technical manuals, procedures and engineering publications
  • Reviewing documentation for accuracy, clarity and consistency
  • Interpreting engineering information, drawings and technical data
  • Working closely with engineers, technicians and subject-matter experts
  • Converting complex vehicle information into clear user instructions
  • Gathering technical information from vehicles, equipment and engineering teams
  • Checking maintenance and inspection procedures for technical accuracy
  • Supporting document reviews, amendments and configuration control
  • Ensuring documentation meets relevant technical and quality standards

Who we’re looking for

We’d like to hear from candidates with experience in areas such as:

  • Armoured or tracked military vehicles
  • Military vehicle maintenance or inspection
  • Vehicle fleet quality assurance
  • Technical authoring or technical publications
  • Defence engineering and equipment support
  • Civilian military or defence contractors
  • Engineering inspection or quality control
  • Maintenance procedures and technical manuals

Transferable Armed Forces experience

This could be an excellent career move for former Armed Forces personnel, including:

  • REME vehicle technicians, inspectors or engineering personnel
  • Engineers with military vehicle quality-assurance experience
  • Personnel involved in equipment support or maintenance standards
  • Technical publications or engineering-documentation specialists

You don’t need to be ex-military.

Candidates from civilian defence contractors will also be considered, particularly those who have worked with tracked vehicles, armoured platforms or specialist vehicle fleets .

What you’ll need

  • Practical knowledge of vehicle engineering, inspection or maintenance
  • Ideally, experience with tracked or armoured vehicles
  • Strong written English and excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to interpret and explain technical information
  • Experience working to controlled processes and quality standards
  • Confidence working with engineers and technical specialists
  • Good Microsoft Office and document-management skills

Training can be provided for someone with the right vehicle, inspection or quality-assurance background who has not previously held the formal title of Technical Author.
