Overview

As Technical Director in AECOM’s UK & Ireland Building Engineering SW&W team, you will lead technical delivery on demanding projects, oversee resources and commercial aspects, and shape client relationships. You’ll apply advanced analysis and seismic design expertise to complex structures, including nuclear and defence contexts, while mentoring engineers and driving business development. This role combines technical leadership with strategic delivery in a fast-paced, collaborative environment that values safety, innovation and impact.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and lead technical delivery on complex projects; manage resources and budgets
  • Provide technical leadership across the team and support business development
  • Prepare clear technical reports for clients and stakeholders
  • Manage key client relationships and contribute to fee proposals and scopes of service
  • Lead independent technical reviews and approve/sign off on designs
  • Mentor staff and support professional development
  • Expand expertise in one or more technology areas and integrate wider engineering considerations
  • Engage in safety case interfaces within the nuclear sector and ensure design alignment with standards
Key requirements
  • Excellent knowledge of standard engineering practices and procedures
  • Lead in analysis and design of seismically qualified structures
  • Experience with safety case interfaces in the nuclear sector
  • Proven track record of delivering defence sector projects
  • Proficiency in design per British Standards and Eurocodes (seismic design)
  • Advanced analysis experience (finite element analysis) with soil-structure interaction desirable
  • Project management understanding for coordinating technical delivery
  • Strong communication skills for proposals, reports, and client presentations
  • Experience with design software packages
  • English fluency in written and verbal communication
  • Ability to interpret results and translate into practical engineering solutions
